The Mennello Museum of American Art .
Location: 900 E. Princeton St. Orlando, FL 32803
Tel:407-246-4278
The atmosphere is unassuming; the Museum more closely resembles a comfortable, welcoming house than a marble-walled holding pen for artistic works. The walls in each room are colorful, with purple, tan, and burgundy hues. The reception/admission desk is almost like a check-in desk at a hotel, and the size of the Museum allows visitors to hear conversations throughout the building (so don't worry too much about whispering).
There is plenty of open space (which is great if you're bring a stroller, or a slightly wild toddler), and each room offers seating to sit back to admire the works on the walls.
About the works: The Museum houses a great collection of folk art, some of which will inspire even those "uninterested" kids to say "Mom, I think I can do that!" The highlight is the permanent collection of Earl Cunningham's brightly (almost neon) colored, highly detailed oil landscapes influenced by his love of the ocean, tropical villages, animals, and Florida. Kids can even try their hand at the "Create Your Own Cunningham" activity center using removable magnets to design a landscape.
The rotating exhibits offer plenty of primitive, mixed media paintings and sculptures for kids of all ages to admire. Previous exhibits included 3-foot tall dogs made of buttons and ceramics, and a giant robot sculpture with blinking lights and computer circuit boards.

CARR PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE
401 West Livingston Street
Orlando, FL 32801
As the patriarch of the Orlando Venues entertainment facilities, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre has seen many changes over the years as the City of Orlando flourished around its classic brick façade.
Constructed in 1926 for approximately $175,000, the facility was originally known as the Municipal Auditorium, or “Muni Aud,” to Orlando natives. On February 21, 1927, the brand new venue presented its first event, the opera Aida, performed by the La Scala Grand Opera Company of Philadelphia.
During the first years after its opening, the Municipal Auditorium also hosted stage productions, organ recitals, church meetings and much to the dismay of local competitors – it also served as a movie house! As Orlando grew during the 1950s and 1960s, the “Muni Aud” incorporated more diverse events, and in 1950, the Florida Symphony began playing their subscription series in the venue.

In 1974, the Orlando Central City Neighborhood Development Board decided to reexamine the Municipal Auditorium and investigate a possible renovation that would transform the facility into a top-notch theater and concert hall. Orlando’s City Council agreed with the Development Board’s decision to renovate and expand the space, and in the fall of 1975 construction began. The most major addition to the exterior of the auditorium was the construction of a glass shell around the original brick façade, which honored the facility’s rich past, while still elevating it to a more contemporary style. The renovation efforts in 1975 also brought a plethora of technical improvements that enhanced the internal functions and acoustics of the venue. Finally, in May of 1978, the Municipal Auditorium received its new name, Mayor Bob Carr Municipal Auditorium, in dedication to Mayor Robert Carr’s service to the City of Orlando.
Today, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre hosts some of the largest and most popular Broadway and theatrical touring productions in the country. It also serves as home to Orlando’s professional arts and cultural programs like the Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera, Orlando Philharmonic and the Festival of Orchestras.
Since the beginning, the intention of the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre has always been to serve the citizens of Orlando by enriching the community with inspiring arts and cultural events; almost a century after its construction, it does so to this day.
Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens
Location: 633 Osceola Avenue Winter Park, Florida 32789
Gallery and Gardens Open: September 1 thru June 30 Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Internationally renowned artist Albin Polasek is one of America’s prominent sculptors of the 20th century. While he worked in a variety of mediums, including stone, bronze, plaster, wood and painting, Polasek’s legacy is left in the sculptures he created. He strove to show the essential unity of head or figure and the beauty of “movement.” He believed the flow of one mass into another made the difference between a living work and something inanimate.
In 1961, the Albin Polasek Foundation was founded by the sculptor and his wife, and at that time, the residence, galleries, chapel and gardens were opened to the public as a museum. Because it was originally intended as a simple residence, the property is different from the standard Florida estate. The residence is not lavish, as Polasek had a deep appreciation for an uncomplicated aesthetic. Similarly, the gardens are quiet and subdued, utilizing gardening art in classic form.

The Best of Architecture & Landmarks in Orlando
The best view of Greater Orlando is seen from the top of SeaWorld Orlando's SkyTower (7007 SeaWorld Drive). The passenger capsule takes six minutes to climb to the top of the 400-foot landmark. As it ascends, the capsule also rotates slowly to show its passengers a complete bird's eye view.
Visit the Well's Built Museum of African American History formerly called the Wells Built Hotel (511 W South St at Division St, 407-245-7535). Dr. William Wells, Orlando's first African-American physician, built the hotel in 1926 to provide lodging to African Americans during segregation, and famous former guests include Duke Ellington and Ray Charles.
Stop by the Old Orlando Railroad Depot (100-102 W Church St), a 21/2-story bricking building made for 19th-century railroad and hotel magnate Henry B. Plant during large-scale development in the area. The building is unique with its three-story corner tower and three-story open porch. The railroad reached Orlando in 1880, and the South Florida Railroad built this depot in 1889.
The Old Orange County Courthouse (65 E Central Blvd) was completed in 1927 at a cost of $1 million. It's the finest example of Beaux Arts architecture in the city. Rumor states that the building is home for two ghosts -- an 8-year-old girl who died close by and a prisoner who killed himself while being held in a jail cell awaiting his criminal sentence. The building also is home to the Orange County Regional History Center.
The City of Kissimmee (on Interstate 4 south of the Walt Disney World Resort) is a fast-growing Disney development that set out to capture the best of the old in a new town. Homes have front porches where neighbors sit out and wave to each other. You can walk to the shops, restaurants, parks and town center. Visit Market Street, which is the heart of the new "old" city.
The Historic Waterhouse Residence and Carpentry Shop and Museum (820 Lake Lily Drive, Maitland) features a fully-restored 1884 Victorian home. Its educational programs and period-correct buildings are designed to teach visitors about the Victorian period in America.
College Park has changed little over the last decades, and its historic homes nestle among towering oaks. The nearby city of Winter Park boasts many Spanish-style buildings in and around the campus of RollinsCollege, which was founded in 1885 and is the oldest recognized college in Florida.
New residential developments, such as Baldwin Park and ThorntonPark in Orlando, are models of how contemporary architecture and nature can blend.
Eatonville, north of Orlando, is one of the oldest all-Black towns to be formed after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and was the first to be incorporated. The town features the ZoraNealeHurstonMonument (200 block of East Kennedy Blvd), a marker honoring the hometown woman who was an anthropologist, folklorist, and distinguished writer during the Harlem Renaissance. Every winter the town stages the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts in memory of the writer who was born there.
