On Sept. 14, I took a stroll with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to visit many of the businesses that sit on the 100 block of Hughey Avenue across from the Amway Center .

If you haven’t been on that block, there’s a neat restaurant and bar, a Caribbean cafe restaurant, a candy shop, a pizzeria and more shops that all aim to draw in the local crowd and the visiting Orlando Magic fans.

A normal day for these folks includes selling their goods to local businesspeople on lunch breaks, chatting with the occasional nearby resident or with each other.

But this day was different.

Since early morning, these businesses were in the spotlight regarding the Orlando Magic’s announced $100 million sports entertainment complex that would radically change the 4.3-acre block of city property they reside in.

From some, there were positive words of praise, but for others it was more a sense of shocked concern about what this means to their bottom lines and for their businesses.

Dyer’s walk through the block that day was to reassure the business owners that their well-being is a priority for this project and any impact from it would be identified ahead of time and resolved so as to not negatively impact the business owners along the 100 block.

The main concerns I repeatedly heard during my visit were:

• What does this mean for rent?

• How will this increase traffic?

• What about the investment already made in these businesses?

City officials said the planned feasibility study will address theses issues, but businesses can expect to be reimbursed for any investment they made to the design of their locations, and the project will take into account their current designs and needs for their new digs.
